DIA Blog 019 - Living Life With Rocks In Your Shoes by H8R

Image
by H8R You know that feeling right? You're moving along through your day, walking down the road or getting in some exercise. Then, BOOM ! It hits you. That sharp, nagging pain of a rock deeply embedded in your shoe right between the insole and the delicate parts of your foot. It's the worst! So, what do you do? Some would stop everything immediately and get that sucker out of there. Others power through and take it out when it's convenient. Which is the right way to go? This thought came to me as I was getting in my jump rope workout at the park. A nice, big rock got in my shoe while I was jumping rope. Stopping to take it out right then would break a pretty nice streak I had going and disrupt my workout. I decided it was best to finish up my workout and then dump those rocks out when I got home ( gaman much?). In my case, the rocks in my shoe were actually rocks in my shoe. But having a lot of tiny annoyances in your life can be just like having ...

DIA Blog 017 - EXPAT WORKOUT? It's Easy If You Do It SMART! by H8R

Image
by H8R So you've decided to get into better shape, right? Good for you! Now where do you start? A lot of people will go and shell out a ton of money to join a fancy gym with nice amenities that you'd never use. Some gyms in Japan can cost up to $100 a month! My advice is to skip the gym and either workout in your house or outside! Aside from the money you'll save by not having to pay for a gym membership, you can also save some time in your day by not having to commute to and from the gym. In today's post, I'll outline a SMART and SIMPLE workout plan that ANYONE can do almost ANYWHERE . Three types of workouts For my workout, I generally have 3 different types of workouts. They all roughly take about 20 minutes to complete. They are: Cardio Strength training Circuit training Cardio This will boost your stamina and endurance so you can work harder without getting as tired. Here are some activities to choose from: Cycling Swimmin...

DIA Blog 016 - Get Fit Without The Gym! Why Expats NEED To Work Out And How To Find The Right Plan For You by H8R

Image
by H8R Expat life can be pretty demanding. You've decided to leave your hometown, friends, family, and the comforts of home behind. Many expats find themselves in an unfamiliar (and sometimes unwelcoming) environment with a host of challenges to face and obstacles to overcome. Take into account that you've also ditched your support system and those expat blues can start to sink in PDQ (pretty damned quick). As people become depressed, they often find comfort in food. If you start to adopt a sedentary lifestyle and put on some extra pounds, this can compound the effects of that expat despair and lead you to a dark, dark place. So what can you do about this? When life gets you down, it's best to get moving! Exercise has been shown to provide many benefits for your physical and mental health including a better mood and sustained energy throughout the day. If you can consistently stick to a fitness plan, you'll find that other parts of your life start to ...

DIA Blog 010 - Why Ballin' On A Budget In Japan Isn't As Hard As You Think It Is by H8R

Image
by H8R Expat life can be really expensive or cheap depending on your location. Out of many popular destinations, Japan is easily one of the MOST expensive in Asia. However, it doesn't have to be that way. If you're on a quest to save money while living large in Japan, then you're reading the right article. While I do lovingly categorize myself as a "cheapskate," I'm cheap in the way that I want to try to get the best deals and the best value for my time/money. In other words, I'm not opposed to spending money, but I will do a little bit more work to stretch that dollar (or yen in this case). This post will give you the inside info so you can live that baller's lifestyle without going broke! Be sure to check out our episode about saving money as an expat! Look for deals and specials Lot's of shops, restaurants, and bars have special promotions all the time. Going to these places at certain times in the day, days in the w...

DIA Blog 005 - 7 Things In Japan That PISS ME OFF That NO ONE Will Tell You About by H8R

Image
by H8R Japan has been the place I've called home for over four years now. If I didn't like the country, I wouldn't have stayed here this long. On the other hand, there are some things about Japan that really "grind my gears." When it comes to choosing a country (or any place) to live in, you're always choosing what kind of problems you're willing to deal with. No place is perfect, but there are pros and cons depending on your lifestyle. Japan is a very safe country and the people are (usually) very friendly. After a few episodes, some of our listeners really wanted to know what I didn't like about living here. With this in mind, here are 7 things in Japan that PISS ME OFF that NO ONE will tell you about! If you haven't checked out our latest episode, you can listen to it here! 1. Guilty by gaijin association Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of great expats living in Japan. Then, there are the not so ...
